Calorifiers: Why Waste Engine Heat – You’ve paid for it!

Have you considered fitting a calorifier? If not, you should!

Calorifier in the System

A calorifier is a type of water heater commonly found on boats, especially those used for extended cruising or liveaboard lifestyles. It uses engine heat or electricity to domestic fresh water, which can then be used for showers, washing dishes, or general cleaning. Here are the key benefits of having a calorifier on a boat:

1. Hot Water Supply While Underway

One of the main benefits of a calorifier is its ability to use engine coolant heat to warm water. When the engine is running, the calorifier heats the water without consuming additional fuel or electricity. This means you can have hot water available simply by using the boat as you normally would. Although different manufacturers will have different specifications,

2. Energy Efficiency

Calorifiers are energy-efficient. They use heat that would otherwise be wasted, reducing the need for electric or gas water heaters. Many units also include an electric immersion heater as a backup, providing flexibility when the engine is off or shore power is available.

3. Increased Comfort Onboard

Having access to hot water adds significant comfort for those spending extended time on board. It allows for warm showers, better cleaning, and an overall improved living experience, especially in colder climates or during winter months.

4. Dual Heating Options

Many calorifiers offer dual heating systems: one from the engine and another from an electric element. This gives users options depending on whether they’re underway or docked with access to shore power, increasing convenience and ensuring hot water availability at all times. Whilst running the engine, boaters can enjoy greater self-sufficiency and independence from marina facilities. This is particularly useful for those who prefer anchoring out or cruising in more remote locations where shore amenities aren’t available.

5. Compact and Space-Saving Design

Calorifiers are designed with marine use in mind and are often compact and easy to install in engine compartments or under seats, making efficient use of limited onboard space.
