Selection of Steering System

For boats fitted with a rudder with speed not exceeding 25 knots, the torque of the rudder or rudders is calculated according to following formula and corrections.

It must be known that the torque necessary to manoeuvre a boat depends on:

  • The speed of the water flowing on the surface of the rudder at a certain angle
  • The rudder size
  • The total sweep of the rudder (and part of the boat), if the rudder stock is not perpendicular
  • The compensating surface of the rudder
    Torque Calculation Formula for Speed below 25 Knots

    C = S x [ (0.4 Lg) – Lc ] x V² x K

C = Torque in kpm schema_safran
S = Total surface of rudder (H x Lg) in sq. m
H = Height of rudder in m
Lg = Width of rudder in m
Lc = Compensation width in m
V = Maximum speed of the boat in knots
K = Coefficient according to total angle of rudder

Once the torque is known, the appropriate cylinder is selected and one or two manual pumps will be added.

Note: If the selected pump has a higher flow rate in order to reduce the number of turns lock to lock, it will be necessary to use a steering wheel with the maximum recommended diameter.

For pleasure boats with planing or semi-planing hulls and speed exceeding 25 knots, the cylinder may be selected by using the chart below:

Tiller for Outboard Motor Cylinders

With this tiller for LS outboard cylinders, the boat can be steered from the motor.

Thanks to this function, the motor can easily be operated without having to resort to the steering wheel (for various fishing actions, anchorage, watch and emergency tiller if need be).
Equipped with a quick coupling, the tiller can be fitted and removed easily and stored in a locker.
Manufactured in stainless steel tube, its weight does not exceed 0.8 kg.

Do not use at a speed exceeding 6 knots.

Depending on its implementation, the flange on a dual outlet pump makes it possible to:

  • install two steering stations with no need of T-fittings, hence reducing the number of crimps and the risks of leakage. This also applies to one steering station and a power pack for autopilot.
  • add a second steering station or a power pack for autopilot without intervention on the existing piping.
  • select the pump outlets (vertical or horizontal) and the types of fittings (straight or elbows) depending on the space available.
  • reduce the cost of the installation by eliminating the set of T-fittings and the time required for crimping.

Dual outlet pumps are supplied with two interchangeable blank plugs.

Power Assisted Steering Systems

The design of this product allows for a very smooth steering feel.

The use of a brushless motor which is only activated when needed, ensures minimal noise generation and lower electric consumption.

The power pack integrates the autopilot functionality and is compatible with the various market players. Owing to its compact size and simplicity of installation, it can be adapted as an add-on to most existing hydraulic steering systems.
