Marine Gearbox Repairs

ARP Peachment offer an in- house repair and complete overhaul service for most Medium size gearboxes for PRM, Hurth, Borg warner.
We will strip down the gearbox and asses cost of repair for you to give the go ahead. So no nasty shocks when you get the bill.

Why Have Your Current Gearbox Rebuilt?

Firstly there could be a significant cost saving over a new gearbox secondly better for the environmental impact. Also it might be you are looking to replace your engine.
A case in point is a boat with an old Perkins 4.108 with a 2.1 Borg warner 71/72C
This is a inline reduction gearbox so short of a very expensive new one the only option would be a drop centre gearbox.
The consequence of this would be having to raise the engine around 75mm to align the couplings, this would involve major bed work, even if this was possible due to the floor hight.
So the best and most cost affective option is the rebuild the current gearbox, once the box is stripped and parts examined, as long as it is viable we will replace with all new seals, forward and revers clutch plates.
On the odd location the input shaft is worn this can also be re-worked, saving the cost of a new shaft.
That just leaves a test run and a new coat of paint.
It will be ready for another life.

Gearbox Repair

Hurth HBW 50/ZF10 no longer in production

It is still possible to get the parts to re-build these gearboxes, so as long as it is not a catastrophic failure we can rebuild them.

We can rebuild most of the PRM range with genuine parts.
Only some of the very old models have parts availability issues, then sometimes we may have the second-hand parts to repair it.

BMC 1.5

What should I replace my BMC 1.5 engine with?

The BMC 1.5 engine is 35hp @ 3500 rpm with a maximum torque of 80Nm @ 2500 rpm. You can find this engine fitted in boats from 25ft to 40 ft with a variety of gearbox options.
The options from Nanni would be the N4.38 for motorboats up to 30ft, yachts up to 36ft and the N4.50 for boats Up to 40 ft.

The Nanni N4.38

The N4.38 is 37.5hp @ 3000rpm with a maximum torque of 94.8 Nm @ 2200rpm

Why the two options to replace the BMC 1.5?

It is a costly operation to replace a boat engine and a large part of the cost is the installation. Ware as the difference in the engine cost between the N4.38 and the N4.50
Although not insignificant, the upgrade would be well worth it on the bigger boats.
As the overall size of the N4.50 is similar to the BMC1.5 there are no issues with the upgrade.
Although this can be discussed with our technical team to come to the best option for your boat.

What’s involved in the replacement?

Once the decision on the best engine option is made, we need to consider the best gearbox and ratio for the boat.
Nanni offer both mechanical and hydraulic options.
It may be the gearbox has been replaced at some point and can be fitted to the new engine. If for instance you have a Borg warner due to the cost of a new one and the installation implications with them being a inline output box it could be the best option is to have us recondition the current gearbox. This can then be fitted to the new engine and painted to match.

Instrument options

The standard panel options are the A4 the upgrade is the C4, we also offer several custom options to suit the boat.

Engine mounting feet.

There are several custom feet options that may match the current bed however there are many versions of the BMC 1.5 so a measure up will be required.

This will depend on the engine choice, gearbox ratio and what size can be fitted,
We can advise the best option for the boat once we have this information.
No doubt there will be various parts required to complete the installation e.g.
Hoses, control heads and cables, electrical components all of which we can supply as part of the engine package.

Volvo 2003

Time to replace your Volvo 2003 engine

Ask the internet the question replace my Volvo 2003 engine and there are several options, one is why not rebuild it with a kit for the base engine the Perkins 400 series,
But would you really want to spend a considerable amount of money on an engine that could be anything from 20 to 40 years of age and direct cooled, so seawater has been pumped through it all its life?
Another option is a new Volvo! Or the Nanni N3.30 with either a TMC 60 or TMC 60A gearbox, The N3.30 is a 29hp and has the same 410mm bed width as the Volvo 2003
Which is a major advantage when it comes to the installation. It is a heat exchanger cooled engine so you will have the option of fitting a calorifier, you can now have hot water from the engine as well as the added protection of an indirect cooled engine.

The overall size of the 2 engines is virtually the same so again, another big advantage.

The engine comes standard with a 120 amp alternator, A4 panel and 4M loom.
If desired you can upgrade the instrument panel to the C4 with a temperature and oil gauge. As you will see from the picture below all service points are to the front of the engine along with the oil sump pump.

Yanmar 1GM/1 GM10 replacement with a Nanni N2.10 or N2.14

The time has come to replace your time served single cylinder Yanmar 1GM /1GM10.
A popular replacement choice is the Nanni N2.10 or the more powerful N2.14 Kubota based twin cylinder indirect injection engines.
Which to choose? Will your boat benefit from a little more power, or do you require the larger 70 amp alternator as the N2.10 has 40 amp, do you want the A4 dash panel with the rev counter, not forgetting the oil sump pump fitted, Then the N2.14 is the best option. (we can fit the N2.10 mounts to the N2.14 to make the install easier.
The next question that comes to mind is how complicated it is to replace your current engine.

Will the new engine physically fit? What will be the increase in weight?

1GM is 554mm long and 385mm high with a weight of 71kg
Nanni N2.10 is 558mm long and 395mm high with a weight of 87 kg
The engine mounts on the N2.10 are set to be the same width and drop as the Yanmar.
(the N2.10 mounts can be fitted to the N2.14)
So nothing to worry about there.

Things that you will need to do. Replace the propeller shaft coupling for a standard

4in coupling, this can be done with a R&D clamp on coupling together with a R&D flexible drive coupling.
As the Nanni is an indirect cooled engine and the Yanmar is a direct cooled engine. You may need to fit a bigger water intake fitting, The Nanni requires a ¾ in intake, commonly the Yanmar will only be 1/2in. (A big benefit is the Nanni will run a calorifier for hot water)
The current exhaust size is 45mm and the Nanni is 40mm so a small reducer will sort this out.

N2.14 TMC40 Pieds 1GM10

The Nanni comes with a replacement dash panel and loom so this is all plug and play.
You are almost there, the Nanni requires an 8mm feed and return fuel line similar to the Yanmar. Throttle and gear cable connections should be roughly the same position,
If you go for the N2.14 you won’t need the stop cable as this engine has an electric stop.

Propeller

This will depend on one, the ratio of the original gearbox and what size is fitted.
We will also want to know the type and model of the boat.
With that information we can recommend the correct size.
